Backup Your iPhone To An External Hard Drive

Apple iPhone apps uses lot of space on phone also when we shoot a video or take pictures, they take lot of space on phone ultimately phone runs out of space so we  need to take regular backup of iPhone. .When we backup our iPhone it has several gigabytes of data to store on our computer's start up disk. Once you take a backup, you will see the noticeable increase in size used on start up disk. 

In this post I will show you how to move this backup from startup disk to external drive, I will also elaborate how to restore this Backup back on your iPhone.

Backup iPhone Using iTunes:

First connect your iPhone to your computer, Click on your device in iTunes and hit backup now button. This will create a backup on your startup disk.

Moving Backup From Startup Disk To External Drive:


Once you take the backup on startup disk and ready to move it external drive, Follow the following steps:

  1. Quite iTunes
  2. For mac ( Open a finder window and type Shift+Command+G ), For Windows go to (C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup).
  3. Locate folder inside of the Backup directories, And move these to another drive. All done....
 That's all you need to do for taking your backup from startup disk to external hard drive.

Moving Backup back to your iPhone:

When you want to restore your iPhone with backup that is stored on external drive, Follow the following steps:

  1. Quite iTunes
  2. For mac ( Open a finder window and type Shift+Command+G ), For Windows go to (C:\Users\your-user-name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup).
  3. Open a folder on your external drive where you stored Backup, Just copy that Backup and paste it in previous location.
  4. Open iTunes and start the restore process.
